What is the Martingale system?
The Martingale system is a simple gambling strategy where you double your bet if you lose money. It should lead to you winning your money back sooner or later. If you lose your first bet, double your bet on the next bet. If you lose again, you must double the bet again. You keep doubling the bet until you get all of your original wagered money back. When you achieve a win, you must go back to the start. That means you start all over again.
Is the Martingale system primarily for sports betting?
The Martingale system was actually originally created to play roulette. Since then, it has spread to other games at the online casinos as well as, for example, sports betting, which we review on this page. The principle is based more on your bets themselves rather than what you bet on. It may become more clear in the next section where we give an example of playing football with this Martingale system.
The martingale strategy on football
It might be a little bit challenging to try to form an idea of the Martingale system just by reading about it. Therefore, we have come up with an example of it below.
- We start with your starting amount. First bet at odds 2.00 and stake of DKK 1 is lost and you have a total balance of DKK -1.
- Second bet at odds 2.00 and a doubled bet of DKK 2 is lost and you have a total balance of DKK -3.
- Third bet at odds 2.00 and a doubled bet of DKK 4 is lost and you have a total balance of DKK -7.
- Fourth bet at odds 2.00 and a doubled bet of DKK 8 is lost and you have a total balance of DKK -15.
- Fifth bet at odds 2.00 and a doubled bet of DKK 16 is lost and you have a total balance of DKK -31.
- Sixth bet at odds 2.00 and a doubled bet of DKK 32 is won and you end up with a positive balance of DKK 1.
In this case, you manage to recoup your losses in the sixth bet. Contrary to the Henze system, you often have to play at odds of at least 2.00 in order to make a profit, or at least break even with the Martingale system. As mentioned further up, when you play with higher odds, it also basically means that there is a lower statistical probability of that outcome ending up taking place.
However, it may depend on the event. For example, it could be that there is a winner’s bet in connection with the World Cup in football, and France stands at odds of 2.00 and England at odds of 5.00. In this hypothetical case, France is the biggest favorite and maybe you can be lucky to win. You never know in the end.
